The lords of the south. This detail comes from my painting showing the four directions of the cosmos within the underworld. At the top appears Huitzilopochtli, the southern hummingbird and patron “God” of the Mexica, associated with war, fire, and the rising sun. Beneath Him are Tlaloc, the lord of rain, storms, and agricultural abundance, and Tepeyollotl, the jaguar “God” of mountains, caves, echoes, and the living heart of the earth. Like the rest of the painting, all are surrounded by waterlilies and aquatic creatures, for the underworld was understood to be a wet and aquatic realm. The south is blue, the color associated with water, rain, and the southern direction.
