All his life, Jim Slater had been able to sleep anywhere at any time. If he had the chance to nod off, he took it. Well, tigers like to catnap too, don’t they? And that’s what Jim turned out to be – a sleeping tiger. Issue 5970, Sleeping Tiger, coming soon - QM

There wasn’t a bomber squadron in North Africa that could outfly the Fleet Air Arm outfit, “Buckley’s Bats”. And the planes these supermen flew? Well, they were Fairey Albacores — cumbersome biplanes with a top speed of only 160 mph. Issue 5968, Dive After Dark, coming soon - QM

I imagine my journey is pretty much a cliché. I watched all the classic war films. Honed my reading skills on @CommandoComic, never disparage them. Without them I wouldn’t be reading @militaryhistori. And of course the outstanding documentary, The World at War. 1

Nostalgia Alert: “Polish Pilot” – Commando War Comic No. 2383 Who else grew up reading these classic Commando comics? Do you know they are still in publication and available via subscription? There is something magical about those pocket-sized war stories packed with action, drama, and incredible artwork! This issue, No. 2383 – “Polish Pilot” follows Karl Latek, a Polish pilot who had flown outdated PZL-11 fighters in the 1939 campaign, now taking to the skies in a modern Hawker Hurricane to seek vengeance against the Luftwaffe. It’s a classic tale of courage, determination, and revenge — pure Commando style! Commando comics like this one introduced so many of us to the Second World War on land, sea and in the air. Even though they’re fictionalised, these stories helped keep the memory of these brave pilots alive for generations and rubbed imaginations to seek out more information. Do you still have a collection of old Commando comics tucked away? What was your favourite issue or series growing up? Are there anymore Polish themed issues? Drop your memories in the comments — we’d love to hear them! 👇 And if you’re a fan of Polish aviation history, stories like this are a fantastic (if dramatised) gateway into the real heroic exploits of the Polish Air Force in exile. #CommandoComics #PolishPilot #WWIIComics #PolishAirForce #Nostalgia #WarComics #BattleOfBritain #PolishHeritageFlight @ww2headquarters @WeHaveWaysPod @CommandoComic

I believe they were the first British warplane to be fitted with RDF/radar. Not as old-fashioned as they looked.

There is so much rubbish written about the Swordfish because of how it looks. Even old authors like Bill Gunston claimed it was "leftover from the First World War" etc. It's job was carry things off ships. It was very very well thought out for doing exactly that.
