I had the honour of receiving His Royal Majesty, the Alara of Ilara Kingdom, Epe Division, Lagos State, and Royal Ambassador of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Oba (Dr) Olufolarin Olukayode Ogunsanwo, on a courtesy visit to our headquarters in Abuja.
I seized the opportunity to congratulate Kabiyesi on his recent appointment as the 6th Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), a recognition of his distinguished leadership and service.
Our discussions focused on expanding data protection awareness and building stronger partnerships to promote a culture of privacy across Nigeria. We explored opportunities for collaboration between the NDPC and LASU, including the possibility of hosting the Digital Privacy Awareness Campaign (DPAC) within the university community and establishing a Data Privacy Club to deepen student engagement on privacy and data protection issues.
I was particularly pleased by Kabiyesi’s visionary proposal for the establishment of a Data Protection and Privacy Centre at LASU. Such a centre would provide a valuable platform for research, innovation, capacity development, public enlightenment, and the advancement of global best practices in data protection.
As Nigeria continues its digital transformation journey, partnerships among government institutions, traditional leadership, and academia will remain essential in driving awareness, strengthening compliance, and safeguarding the privacy rights of individuals.
I appreciate His Royal Majesty’s continued support for the NDPC’s mandate and look forward to the impactful outcomes that can emerge from this collaboration.
Strengthening data privacy awareness requires collaboration across all sectors of society, and I am encouraged by the growing support for this important national agenda.
