Stellantis to go Electric vehicle only in entry-level category Chinese partnerships will be the key to getting this technology. Excerpt from Automotive News Jun 15th, 2026 BRUSSELS — Stellantis is abandoning its multi-energy strategy for its next generation of electric minicars, betting instead that affordable electric-only E-Car models can help it compete in Europe’s increasingly crowded entry-level EV segment. The decision is a departure for Stellantis, which has emphasized flexibility in powertrain choices across its lineup. The move reflects growing pressure from Chinese competitors and the need to reach aggressive EV price targets. Unlike most of the automaker’s current models, the E-Cars will only be available as battery-electric vehicles, Emanuele Cappellano, the head of Stellantis’ Enlarged Europe region, said at the Automotive News Europe Congress here June 10 . For example, the Fiat 500 minicar is available as a battery-electric vehicle or mild hybrid. Instead of offering multiple powertrains in every segment, Stellantis will focus on making the small EVs affordable, Cappellano said. The goal is to sell them at €15,000 ($17,400), which would undercut nearly all EVs sold in Europe. For comparison, the Renault Twingo Electric starts at just below €20,000, while the Leapmotor T03 is priced at about €18,000. The two E-Cars announced by Stellantis will be a model for Fiat and a remake of the 2CV for Citroen. They will compete in the minicar segment against models such as the Renault Twingo, Volkswagen ID1 and Leapmotor T03. Stellantis is developing a dedicated platform for E-Cars with partners, potentially including China’s Leapmotor. Stellantis has a joint venture to sell Leapmotor cars outside of Europe. The companies have already agreed to share production sites in Spain and technologies. In contrast, Stellantis’ STLA One platform, covering small, compact and midisze cars, will offer multiple powertrains. The E-Car name mirrors a recent European Commission proposal to incentivize small, Europe-built EVs through emission “supercredits” for automakers. Chinese partnerships a chance to learn ‘in a humble way’ Growing Chinese competition is pressuring car prices after a pandemic-era period when demand exceeded supply. “With the current price competition level, Stellantis cannot sustain the level of investment we need to advance our technology and product offering,” Cappellano said. Cappellano said the Chinese partnerships are a way to offer something complementary to Stellantis’ brands in segments the group doesn’t serve and to optimize factory utilization. It will also be a way to learn “in a humble way” technologies the company is still developing , he said. The E-Cars will help Stellantis increase its EV sales and share, Cappellano said. He said his target is to triple Stellantis’ current EV share by 2030. The EV share of Stellantis sales in Europe was 13.7 percent in 2025, according to Dataforce. One of the levers Stellantis can pull to compete in Europe is its large number of brands, which some analysts have called excessive, Cappellano said. Stellantis’ three-tier brand strategy, unveiled in May, designates Peugeot and Fiat as global brands receiving priority for new products and technologies. Alfa Romeo, Citroen and Opel are regional European brands, while DS and Lancia are single-market specialists. Cappellano said the strategy should be read as relating to capital allocation: Global brands will receive first investments in products and new technologies, he said, and investment in the second- and third-tier brands will diversify the products with greater reach.

Stellantis to offer Opel branded vehicle built on Leapmotor platform. Opel targets Skoda Elroq with Leapmotor-based electric SUV Excerpt from Automotive News Jun 12th, 2026 Opel’s new compact electric SUV built with Leapmotor technology will be positioned below the Grandland and will compete with vehicles such as the Skoda Elroq in Europe, CEO Florian Huettl said. Stellantis and China’s Leapmotor have said that they will build the Opel electric SUV in Spain as part of a deepening partnership. Huettl said Leapmotor will help Opel to quickly fill a crucial gap in its lineup. “We clearly see a white spot in the 4,500-mm category that Opel does not serve,” Huettl said on a June 8 call with journalists. The Grandland SUV is 4,650 mm long, 150 mm longer than the 4,500-mm length for models at the heart of the European compact SUV segment. Opel will get rival to Kia, Renault, Ford electric SUVs The Leapmotor tie-up will quickly give Opel a crucial model at the heart of the electric compact SUV, where it currently doesn’t compete. “This is where the big players of today’s market operate in a successful way,” Huettl said, citing the Skoda Elroq, which was the best-selling electric compact SUV in the first four months in Europe according to figures from market analyst Dataforce. Other rivals will include the Kia EV3, Renault Scenic E-Tech and the Ford Explorer. The new Opel model will be a practical addition to the range, rather than offering a more quirky model like the Mokka small SUV, which sits apart from the more spacious Frontera in the small segment. “The new SUV really is a lot about family. Very much modern, good-looking, while respecting the needs that we have in terms of trunk and rear space,” Huettl said. “The differentiation [between the C-SUV and Grandland] will be less than you would see between the Mokka and the Frontera.” Currently, the Grandland is available as an battery-electric car, plug-in hybrid, and mild hybrid, whereas the SUV developed with Leapmotor will initially be sold only as a full EV. Production is scheduled to start in 2028 at Stellantis’s plant in Zaragoza, Spain, alongside the Leapmotor B10 compact SUV. Leapmotor launched European sales of China-built B10 in October 2025. Future models built in Zaragoza will avoid the European Union’s high tariffs on Chinese battery-electric car imports. The B10 will be the first Leapmotor car built in Europe. Leapmotor technology helps Opel match Chinese speed Stellantis plans to leverage its partnership with Leapmotor to fend off fast-paced Chinese competitors that have quickly moved into Opel’s key northern European markets including Germany and the U.K., where Opel models are sold as Vauxhalls. “We are really moving at China speed,” Huettl said during the June 8 call. “We had a review this morning with the management team and already four months in, we have gained a lot of time compared to the traditional development process.” The SUV is being developed together by Leapmotor and Opel using existing Leapmotor components including the battery, drivetrain and electronic architecture. “Chinese manufacturers have been quick in developing a set of technologies and skills in that field, which today Western manufacturers are not yet capable of delivering,” Huettl said, citing Leapmotor’s advantage in electronic architecture. The tie-up will also give Opel better access to Chinese battery technology as well as China’s supplier base. Earlier this year, Bloomberg reported that some Stellantis electric models such as the Peugeot 3008 and 5008 are being delayed by as long as eight months because of production snags involving long-range batteries made by Automotive Cells Co.

Nissan to be a contract manufacturer and help build Chinese competitor Chery’s offering. I have said before that legacy auto brands would become assemblers for the Chinese, but I did not think it would happen this quickly. I see this as a transitionary step as Chery grows and Nissan declines. There’s not much money in the contract manufacturing business. This looks to be CKD production, which just means assembling complete kits from China. It may later evolve to PKD, with some local sourcing. Stellantis has been doing something similar with Leapmotor, but they have significant equity in the brands international operations, so they will be in a better spot. They proposed CKD in an idle plant in Brampton, Ontario, Canada, but disgruntled, former union employees at the plant created a backlash and got the progress stopped. Ford has reportedly been talking to Geely about something similar. Nissan’s UK production deal with Chery will boost profitability, Europe boss says Excerpt from Automotive News Jun 12th, BRUSSELS — Nissan plans to be a “contract manufacturer” for China’s Chery at its underutilized Sunderland plant in England, where production has fallen below profitable levels, Nissan’s head of Europe Max Messina said. Nissan started talks with Chery, whose brands include Jaecoo and Omoda, after production at Sunderland fell below the level at which the factory could operate profitably, Messina, head of Nissan’s AMIEO region that includes Europe, told the Automotive News Congress here June 10. Production at Nissan’s Sunderland plant dropped to 273,174 cars in 2025 compared with more than 500,000 annually 10 years ago, according to company figures. Nissan saw contract manufacturing for Chery as an opportunity it couldn’t pass up because it will help the Japanese automaker reverse persistent losses in Europe. “We want to be strategic as much as possible, but sometimes you need to be opportunistic,” Messina said. Nissan and Chery have signed a memorandum of understanding that would see Nissan build Chery cars on one of two production lines in the plant, where Nissan currently builds the Qashqai, Juke and Leaf. “We would be a contract manufacturer to them,” Messina said. “They give us their vehicles — we’re going to produce them.” Nissan, Chery debate kit assembly vs. local parts sourcing The two companies are discussing whether Nissan will build Chery cars from kits or increase localization by incorporating shared parts from Nissan’s supply chain. “We need to look at the financial benefits on both sides,” Messina said. Assembling cars from kits would allow Nissan to quickly incorporate Chery production into its plant, hitting the target start date of next year. However, shipping in kits for local production is controversial because it adds little value locally. Chery currently builds cars from semi-knocked-down (SKD) kits at a former Nissan plant in Barcelona and has said it wants to increase local content. Localizing production to include European-built parts would qualify the components for benefits under the European Union’s planned Industrial Accelerator Act but it would also reduce the cost advantage Chinese automakers have when building cars using their own highly scaled supply chain. Chery’s Jaecoo, Omoda brands are growing fast in Europe Chery has rapidly grown its share in the U.K. since launching in 2024 with the Jaecoo and Omoda brands, capturing 6 percent of the market in the first four months of 2026, overtaking Ford, Toyota and Nissan, according to market analyst Dataforce. The Jaecoo 7 compact SUV was the U.K.’s best-selling car in March. For assembly at the Sunderland plant, Chery is expected to focus on right-hand-drive models for the U.K. market. Nissan has taken the tough decision to reduce capacity and sell fewer cars in the region, Messina said. “When I took on the role seven months ago, we decided to focus more on profit than cash [generation],” he said. “So we accepted a drop in volume.
