Did you know ❓
On April 28, 1988, an Aloha Airlines Boeing 737 suffered a major structural failure while cruising at about 24,000 feet over Hawaii.
A large section of the aircraft's roof tore away, leaving part of the passenger cabin exposed to the open sky.
There were 95 people on board.
Despite the damage, the flight crew kept control of the aircraft and managed to land safely at Kahului Airport on Maui.
Ninety-four people survived.
Flight attendant Clarabelle Lansing was lost during the decompression and was never found.
Investigators later traced the accident to metal fatigue and corrosion caused by years of frequent short-haul flights between the Hawaiian islands.
The aircraft looked almost impossible to save.
Yet it made it back to the ground.
More than three decades later, Flight 243 is still studied as one of aviation's most unusual survivable accidents.
