Devlin Barrett has covered federal law enforcement for more than two decades. His new book contains a never-before-released secret recording of a meeting in which Emil Bove told Public Integrity prosecutors he wanted two career lawyers to sign a motion dismissing the Eric Adams case - and that whoever signed would "emerge as leaders of the Public Integrity Section." The person who signed that motion now runs what's left of the Public Integrity Section. When Congress asked Bove about this, he said he didn't understand the question. Then he didn't remember. Then he said he didn't do it. The recording exists. Barrett talked to people who were in the original meeting and then watched Bove testify. They believed he wasn't telling the truth to Congress. Barrett's framing of what's happening inside the department is the sharpest I've read: this is a different kind of fishing expedition. Not prosecutors looking for dirt on a specific target. A fishing expedition for prosecutors willing to lower standards and charge cases that career lawyers refuse to touch. The numbers: more than half the lawyers in the Civil Rights Division have left. One in five lawyers in the Criminal Division have left. The National Security Division - terrorism and espionage cases - has lost a tremendous number of its senior lawyers. One person described themselves and their colleagues as "mole people, just trying to stay out of the eye of leadership." The department responsible for public integrity is being run by someone who, on tape, told prosecutors that signing a politically motivated motion would earn them a promotion. The tape exists.
