Given the history of gun control in the US for the past 80 years or so, there is no reason to believe the Republicans are functionally better than the Democrats on gun rights. More and more, gun owners are finally realizing this. However, in the spirit of cooperation here a few suggestion for policies that the Republicans can promote and enact to prove they are serious.
1. Amend the Firearms Owners Protection Act (FOPA) to include overnight stays for rest under the "safe harbor" provisions. Include a Justice Department policy that any DA who prosecutes a traveler who is complying with the safe harbor provisions of FOPA be investigated for civil rights violations.
2. Repeal of the Hughes Amendment.
3. Nationwide legalization of suppressors.
4. Modification of all laws regarding EVPOs so that only close relatives and, under limited circumstance, a person's doctor or licensed therapist can request one. There must be no immunity for false claims and deliberate false claims are at least a Class 1 misdemeanor with an option for a Felony if malice can be proven. Police and prosecutors are specifically excluded from asking for such an order.
5. Repeal of all laws preventing importation of collectible, historical firearms.
6. All states must adopt shall-issue licensing as a minimum with constitutional carry as the preferred mode. Any licensing requirement must not burden citizens or legal aliens with costly training requirements and every license-to-carry (LTC) must be equal to any other issued by the State.
7. Creation of an LTC Compact like that already in use for Driver's Licenses.
8. The District of Columbia must recognize an LTC issued by any State in the Union.
9. All States must make the minimum age for purchasing a firearm less than or equal to the voting age.
10. Anonymization of any background checks that remain using a Blind Identification Database.
11. Training on firearms safety and proficiency in schools. Ideally beginning in grammar school but no later than High School.
When all of the above are firmly in existence then we can talk.
