Bangladesh: Missing Person Campaign Collapses as Rape and Forced Abortion Allegations Surface Against Senior Student Leader
Dhaka | International Desk
A major controversy has erupted in Bangladesh after a senior leader of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, the country’s largest Islamist student organization, was found by police following a nationwide campaign alleging that he had been abducted. The case has since taken a dramatic turn after authorities stated that the leader had not been kidnapped but had instead gone into hiding, while a woman subsequently filed criminal allegations accusing him of rape, coercion, and forced abortion.
The incident has triggered widespread debate across Bangladesh regarding accountability, political narratives, and the moral credibility of organizations that publicly advocate religious and ethical values.
Nationwide Campaign Over Alleged Abduction
The controversy began on June 11 when Jisan Ahmed Prodhan, Central Assistant Secretary for International Affairs of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir and former president of the organization’s Cumilla West District unit, was reported missing.
Following his disappearance, family members filed a General Diary (GD) with police, while Islami Chhatra Shibir launched an extensive public campaign demanding his recovery.
On June 12, the organization’s Central President Nurul Islam and Secretary General Sibgatullah issued a joint statement expressing deep concern over what they described as the disappearance of a senior student leader.
In the statement, Shibir leaders alleged that Jisan had been abducted and claimed that the kidnappers were demanding ransom from his family. The organization further accused law enforcement agencies of failing to take effective action and questioned whether political opponents could be involved in the incident.
The statement, distributed to national media outlets by Central Publicity Secretary S.M. Forhad, received significant attention across Bangladeshi media and social media platforms.
Student activists and supporters organized protests, online campaigns, and public appeals demanding Jisan’s safe return, portraying the incident as a serious law-and-order issue.
Police Investigation Reveals Different Narrative
However, the official police investigation later produced a significantly different account of events.
According to Cumilla District Police, investigators found no evidence supporting claims of abduction, ransom demands, or political conspiracy.
Instead, authorities stated that Jisan had voluntarily gone into hiding and was later located in the Laksam area of Cumilla district.
Police say that while investigating the missing-person report, they uncovered allegations involving a young woman who claimed to have been in a relationship with Jisan.
Investigators allege that the relationship began several months ago after the two became acquainted through Facebook.
According to the complaint, Jisan allegedly raped the woman at his rented residence in Daudkandi on May 20 after promising marriage.
The woman further alleged that she later became pregnant and was subsequently pressured to terminate the pregnancy. The complaint also accuses Jisan of intimidation and threats when she sought marriage following the pregnancy.
Police investigators claim that abortion-inducing medication was arranged and provided to the woman and that additional medication was later supplied after complications developed.
scrutiny and may have lasting implications for the public perception of both the accused leader and the organization he represents.
Editor’s Note: The allegations against Jisan Ahmed Prodhan remain under investigation. Under Bangladeshi law, he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
