On a scale of 1-10, my concern level about the
#Bears is a 2.
At the end of the day, we’re talking about wins and losses. I didn’t expect them to go to Houston and win.
The Defense proved that they every bit as good as we think they are; holding that explosive
#Texans Offense to one Touchdown and four long Field Goals.
The Offense has looked terrible, even worse than I thought they would, in the first two weeks. Mainly because the OC seems more concerned with what he wants to do, and less concerned with what his players are able to do.
Calling 54 pass plays for your Rookie QB in his second game, against a very good defensive front, behind an OLine that’s still trying to find its footing, is malpractice.
They need to stubbornly commit to the run. I know they haven’t been averaging 4-5yds a pop on the ground. But guess what?? They haven’t been averaging that through the air either.
Committing to the run will settle down this OLine, and open up the things that we KNOW Caleb does well right now; bootleg, play-action, throwing on the move. Those types of pass plays also leave the OLine less vulnerable.
And when I say commitment to the run game, I mean with formations, personnel groupings; bring in another TE, add another OT if you need to, get your FB in there (I know KB was out with an injury Sunday).
Play smash mouth football, and throw when it’s convenient/advantageous for you. Lean on your outstanding Defense and Special Teams until this Offense is actually ready to take center stage.
During the Spring/Summer, Coach Waldron said he would tailor the Offense to the strengths of his players. Right now, he’s not doing that. Hopefully, either he’ll change his mind, or Coach Eberflus changes it for him.
With all that being said, why am I not worried?
The
#Bears next four opponents are winless, a combined 0-8 to start the season.
If you wanna get your run game on track, the
#Colts are the team to do it against. They’ve given up 474 rushing yards in two games! The Bears MUST go to Indy this week and establish the run game early, and STICK TO IT throughout the game. Those 2 and 3 yard runs will turn into 8 and 9 yard runs.
Establishing the running game will open up more favorable passing situations for Caleb Williams and this Offense. I expect Caleb to pass for the first two Touchdowns of his career on Sunday.
The Bears then welcome into Soldier Field the lowly
#Panthers, and the beat-up
#Rams, before heading to London to face the
#Jaguars who have also started 0-2. The Bears should be favored in each of those games, and, if they take care of business this Sunday in Indy, will be sitting at 5-1 heading into their Week 7 Bye.
