Tears welled in my eyes the first time I listened through Union Chapel. Beneath the stripped-down arrangements and delicate fingerpicking lies a profound existential ache. The performances feel suspended between faith and doubt, hope and grief, meaning and its absence. Every note seems to expose another fracture in the human condition, while the chapel acoustics transform those fractures into something almost sacred. It is the sound of people wrestling with impermanence and finding, if not answers, at least beauty in the struggle. Maybe my favorite album in five or so years.

When I left my home province of Alberta at 17 for Ottawa, and felt homesick, what grounded me was listening to the music of the late great folk music legend, Bill Bourne. Seeing him live at Alberta festivals inspired me to play in the first place, and I was lucky to take guitar lessons from him over a couple of summers. The style of the song, fingerpicking with the thumb holding down the bass, I learned from listening to Bill, who was big into the country or Piedmont blues style, and players like Mississippi John Hurt. I’ll never play like Bill, a real virtuoso, but he was a big inspiration. The artwork here is by my friend and early bandmate, the very talented artist, drummer, pianist, musicologist, and producer, Allyson Rogers.
