Iran are actually good with the ball higher up the pitch.
Fullback and wingers on different lines, #9 and #10 close together, often attack with 6 on the top line as the centre backs and the #6 #8 manage the build-up, but they are very chaotic defensively.
Man-oriented but leaving New Zealand with a 1 in the build-up.
The centre backs also can’t get to grips with Chris Wood and his physicality.
New Zealand are basic defensively in a standard 4-4-2 where the #9 and #10 manage the ball-side centre half and #6. But at least they have clarity and adhere to principles of the game. They are also looking after the ball well, playing direct when necessary, dribbling to win 1v1 duels, and running off the back of Iran which is causing their defensive idea all sorts of problems. They have also came out on top in most duels.
Clear who the better team is early on despite the fact that Iran were heavy favourites by the oddsmakers. But New Zealand have to keep being brave to do all of the things that they have done well so far. If they sit back for long periods to try and see the game out, they play into Iran’s hands. It’s key to stop that at the source.
