Both reduce humans to combatants for profit/entertainment. HG tributes are styled, interviewed, bet on. UFC fighters get the full production treatment — walkouts, promos — but at the seat of government, it blurs sport, politics, and power.
Deeper tin-foil: This event normalizes the idea that violence-as-entertainment belongs at the highest levels of state. In uncertain times (economy, geopolitics), it’s a flex: “We can turn anything into our arena.” If HG warned about authoritarianism via spectacle, this is the soft launch — elites laughing while the districts (us) argue online about it instead of uniting.
Fighters and critics have been screaming the comparison for months. Whether it’s harmless patriotism or dystopian signal, the optics are straight out of Collins’ playbook. GameMaker also supports compiling to native code (YYC), but there are a lot of games that preferred to use VM for one reason or another (YYC is more strict than VM, YYC has longer compile times, VM is more consistent between targets, some targets did not support YYC, etc)

GameMaker games compile to bytecode instead of native code, similar to how Java works, so there are tools (like UndertaleModTool) that can modify games and decompile it back to GML code
Butterscotch is a reimplementation of the GM runner/VM, so it executes the game's bytecode
