Distl Log — Day 2. Today was less about shipping, more about getting our thinking straight. The why, not just the what 👇 I made myself look at the number I didn't want to. ~1 in 3 readers tap through to listen to the full episode, the whole promise working. But they're not coming back the next day yet. A high completion rate is a vanity win. For a daily habit, retention is the only number that matters. So I rebuilt our internal dashboard to lead with the scary metric, not the flattering one — and to feel like the product (calm, editorial) instead of a generic wall of green/red tiles. A dashboard that makes you feel good instead of telling the truth is working against you. Then the big one: permission. Everyone here scrapes podcasts. I don't want to. Researched it — getAbstract & Blinkist have run permission-first summaries for years, framed as discovery that drives listens back to the creator. The scrapers got burned. The moat was never the summarizer. It's a network of creators who want to be here. So I sent the first DM. To a creator I genuinely admire. Not "we're using your stuff" — "can I feature your show, with your blessing, and show you exactly how many people it sends back to listen?" Permission-first or nothing. The thread through all of it: Distill the ideas, never the exact words. Always drive people back to the original. We only win when the creator wins. Day 2 done. The mountain is retention. Tomorrow we climb.
