22 Days Until the @CSURams join the @pac12! ๐Ÿ For Day 22, we are remembering an absolute trailblazer and one of the most electric multi-sport legends in the history of Colorado State. #22, Alex "Bullet" Burl (1951-1954)! ๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ At Denver's Manual High School, he won the 1949 state title in the 100-yard dash. Burl later brought that blistering, elite speed to Fort Collins. On the gridiron, he was a lethal two-way weapon, anchoring the Aggies as a three-year starter at both halfback and safety. But on the track, he became an immortal, dominating the 100 and 220-yard dashes and shattering color barriers at the university. A true pioneer resume: - Three-time NCAA Track & Field All-American - Finished 6th (100 yards) and 5th (220 yards) at the 1954 NCAA National Championships - Three-year starter at halfback and safety for the Aggies football squad - 1954 Nye Award Winner (First Black student-athlete to win CSU's top male athletic honor) - Played in the 1954 Chicago College All-Star Game - Drafted by the Chicago Cardinals, but deferred his NFL career to serve in the U.S. Army - CHSAA Hall of Fame (1999; as coach and athlete), CSU Athletics Hall of Fame (2000), and Colorado Sports Hall of Fame (2018) inductee When his NFL career ended, Burl returned home to Denver Public Schools as a teacher and coach (track, football, cross country) at Manual and West High Schools. Throughout the 1970s, his Manual track programs absolutely dominated the state, capturing multiple team championships. Over a 30-year career, he became a legendary life-changer and mentor for generations of Denver youth, before he passed in 2009. #Pac12Countdown #GoRams

23 Days Until the @CSURams join the @pac12! ๐Ÿ For Day 23, we are bringing CSU Baseball back to the timeline to highlight one of the greatest arms to ever take the mound in Fort Collins. A homegrown Colorado talent who dominated the collegiate ranks before becoming a World Series Champion. #23*, Felix "Tippy" Martinez (1970-1972)! โšพ A La Junta native, Martinez anchored the Rams' rotation in the early 70s. He nearly pitched CSU to a WAC championship in 1972 before making the leap to professional baseball. A legendary, record-setting playing resume: - Set the CSU single-season record with a 1.25 ERA (Ranked 2nd nationally in 1972) - The first and only 10-win season in CSU Baseball history (10-1 in 1972) - 14-year Major League Baseball career (115 career saves) - 1983 World Series Champion and American League All-Star (Baltimore Orioles) While his long major league career was defined by his elite relief pitching, Martinez cemented his name in baseball lore during the 1983 season. In a tied extra-inning game against the Toronto Blue Jays, he incredibly picked off three different baserunners at first base in a single inning to escape a jam and help secure the win. Elite collegiate production and an unforgettable MLB legacy.๐Ÿ˜ค * (Tippy wore #23 for the Orioles, but I was unable to confirm his number at CSU or find many photos!) #Pac12Countdown #GoRams

24 Days Until the @CSURams join the @pac12! ๐Ÿ For Day 24, we are celebrating a @CSUMBasketball legend who made his mark before Moby Arena was even built. #24, Bill Green (1960-1963)! ๐Ÿ€ Long before the modern era of CSU hoops, Green was a walking mismatch. He possessed a rare combination of size, agility, and elite touch that made him one of the best college athletes of his era. He capped off his storied career by leading the Rams to the 1963 NCAA Tournament and cementing himself as one of the best players in the country. A program-defining, elite playing resume: - 1963 Consensus All-American - Still holds CSU records for most (and second-most) points scored in a single game (48 v. DU; 44 v. Regis) - Graduated as CSU's all-time leading scorer with 1,682 career points (avg 22.1 points and 9.6 rebounds per game) - The only jersey (#24) retired by @CSUMBasketball - Selected in the 1st Round (8th overall) of the 1963 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics (and also drafted in 1963 by the Boston Red Sox and Dallas Cowboys) While he was a first-round pick by the Boston Celtics, a severe fear of flying kept him from playing in the NBA. Instead, Green pivoted to a career in education. He earned his Master's degree and dedicated his life to teaching, eventually serving as a long-time principal who successfully turned around a struggling junior high school in the South Bronx. Green passed away in 1994 at age 53. #Pac12Countdown #GoRams
