Remember Aaron Swartz? The hacktivist that wanted to make publicly funded scientific research accessible to the public, and after downloading tons of scientific articles from the MIT JSTOR database.
The American justice system - despite the outcry from the academic, digital and pretty much every community out there - treated him as a terrorist, charged him with 50 yrs and 1M in fines.
He commuted suicide in 2013.

Twenty-five years ago, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology made a bold move that most universities would never dare.
Instead of locking its world-class course materials behind campus walls, MIT decided to put nearly its entire curriculum online, completely free for anyone with an internet connection.
That decision gave birth to MIT OpenCourseWare (OCW).
What began as a bold experiment in 2001 has become one of the most significant educational initiatives in history.
Today, OCW provides materials from more than 2,500 undergraduate and graduate courses across virtually every discipline: physics, engineering, artificial intelligence, economics, biology, mathematics, computer science, and many more.
Anyone can access lecture notes, problem sets, exams, syllabi, and a growing library of video lectures, with no tuition, no application, and no account required.
According to MIT, more than 500 million people worldwide have used these resources over the past 25 years.
The impact has been profound. Students use it to ace exams, explore new fields, and launch careers. Educators around the globe integrate the materials into their own teaching. Many learners credit OCW with helping them pass professional certifications and unlock new opportunities.
Beyond its direct benefits, OpenCourseWare helped spark the global open education movement, inspiring dozens of other universities to share their knowledge freely online.
Even more impressive: the project was originally planned as a 10-year initiative. A quarter-century later, it's still expanding.
MIT now aims to reach 1 billion learners in the coming decade, while enhancing the experience with powerful new AI-powered learning tools.

Activity:
Ababil of Minab publicly claimed responsibility for a destructive cyber intrusion against the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA / LA Metro). The operators exfiltrated sensitive data and conducted destructive actions targeting IT infrastructure, virtualization environments (including vCenter VM deletion), databases, and backup/recovery systems. A major operational security failure exposed their staging server, revealing the full scope of the campaign, custom tooling, and previously undisclosed victims.
Targeted Sectors:
• Public transportation and critical infrastructure (LA Metro – SCADA/OT systems, rail yard management)
• Academic institutions (e.g. Ruppin Academic Center)
• Media and private sector organizations in Israel
• Entities in Turkey and other regional targets
Timeline:
• Mid-March 2026: Initial intrusion detected at LA Metro
• Late March – early April 2026: Ababil of Minab publicly claims responsibility with screenshots and video evidence
• 2 April 2026: LA Metro officially confirms the breach
• 26 May 2026: Gambit Security attributes the campaign to MOIS-linked infrastructure (Black Shadow)
• 15 June 2026: Hunt.io researchers discover and analyze the exposed staging server containing ~5 GB of exfiltrated data
Operational Focus:
The campaign combined data exfiltration with deliberate destruction of recovery capabilities. Operators used custom Flask-based AES-CBC chunked uploaders, multi-part RAR archives, and proxychains for data movement. The exposed server (5.255.127[.]55:8020) contained LA Metro SQL backups with SCADA configurations, personnel records, and operational data, plus artifacts from additional Israeli and Turkish victims. Operator .bash_history, credential dumps, and network configs were also left accessible. The server remained online for weeks after public reporting.
Defender Priorities:
• Immediately audit and secure any publicly exposed directories or staging servers
• Harden OT/SCADA environments in critical infrastructure with strict network segmentation and monitoring
• Protect and test backup/recovery layers independently of production systems
• Monitor for custom exfiltration tools (Flask receivers, FileFiend-style collectors) and vCenter/database anomalies
• Review administrative access logs for unauthorized changes to virtualization and backup infrastructure
• Implement least-privilege principles and multi-factor authentication for all remote admin interfaces
