The Carol season is now in full swing. Diolch yn fawr iawn to everyone who braved the awful storm to join us for the @SJACymru joint @StJohnCardiffV and Mid Glamorgan Council Carol Service at All Saints Church, Barry. Your presence genuinely made the evening feel special despite the weather. We are grateful to Rev Canon Stewart Lisk and Rev Canon Zoe King for their thoughtful arrangements and for guiding the service so beautifully. Our appreciation also goes to those who delivered readings with such clarity and warmth including the Prior @PrioryWales, Lord Lieutenant, Chair @drbaig13, Mayor @VOGCouncil, Cabinet Member @cardiffcouncil, High Sheriff South Glamorgan @highsheriffs, County Commissioner and Chair of Mid Glamorgan Council. The Organist, the National St John Ambulance Cymru Choir, Soloist Rebecca Jolliffe, Côr Ysgol Isaf Bro Morgannwg and Bella Hutchings Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Morgannwg all delivered beautiful performances that lifted the whole evening. Thank you to everyone who helped make it such a memorable and uplifting service. All funds raised will support the vital work of the charity.

VJ Day Commemorations at Ely Cathedral On this day, we remember with solemn gratitude the brave men of the Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, and Royal Norfolk Regiments who fought in the Battle of Singapore, which fell to Japanese forces on 15 February 1942 — one of Britain’s greatest military losses of the Second World War. Many of these soldiers endured unimaginable suffering in Japanese prisoner of war camps, most notoriously along the Burma–Thailand Railway, where they spent more than three years in brutal conditions. In late 1945, those who survived finally came home. Today, as we mark VJ Day at Ely Cathedral, we honour their courage, sacrifice, and resilience — and remember those who never returned. Swaffham Bulbeck Fête A quintessential village afternoon, with the whole community coming together to make it a great success. Homemade cakes, homegrown plants, crafts, books, and a brilliant raffle all enjoyed to the sound of a lively brass band. The highlight? The ever-popular St Mary’s Grand National racing game! Peterborough Cathedral – Choral Evensong for the Benefactors A moving service of choral evensong in the magnificent setting of Peterborough Cathedral, honouring the generosity of benefactors from Abbot John, over 900 years ago, through to the present day. It costs an extraordinary £6,000 a day to keep this iconic building running. A powerful reminder of the ongoing need for support. A memorable evening at RAF Wittering, where the county line runs right through the site meaning two counties were represented and four High Sheriffs were present, two of us in full Court dress. What is the collective noun for High Sheriffs? A stateliness? A procession? Or perhaps, on this occasion, a squadron! We were warmly welcomed and deeply impressed by Station Commander Wing Commander Nicola Duncan, whose passionate words at the formal reception reflected both pride and purpose. We were fascinated by what we were allowed to know and respectful of what we were not. The Honorary Degree ceremony at the Senate House, Cambridge, was nothing short of inspiring. An electric cohort of recipients, each remarkable in their field, were honoured for their lasting contributions and extraordinary impact on society. The traditional red and black gowns carried the weight of history, matched only by the gravitas of the Latin citations that marked each award. I was fortunate to speak with Sir John Rutter, who at nearly 80 continues to compose with undiminished passion — a truly fascinating man. Sincere thanks to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Deborah Prentice, for hosting such a memorable occasion, and to Lady Arden of Heswall for her eloquent and thoughtful acceptance speech. What an inspirational day at the Whittlesey Big Bash! Brilliantly organised by Robert Windle – a huge thank you to him for bringing the community together in such a special way.
