I am writing to express my concern regarding the recent proposals under discussion to extend the Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) eligibility period for skilled workers in the UK. While I understand that these measures are part of broader efforts to reduce net migration, I strongly believe that applying such changes retrospectively to existing skilled workers would be deeply unfair and damaging. Many of us have come to the UK legally, completed our higher education—including postgraduate degrees—and secured employment under the skilled worker visa route. We have integrated into society, contribute actively to the UK economy, and consistently pay taxes. When we applied for these visas, we did so based on the immigration rules and timelines that were in place at the time. Any retroactive changes now would feel like a breach of trust and a betrayal of the commitments made to us. If such proposals move forward without protecting current visa holders, it would undermine the credibility of the UK’s immigration system and send a disheartening message to those who have made long-term personal, professional, and financial investments in this country. I sincerely urge the government to reconsider these proposals and ensure that any changes to ILR policy apply only to future applicants, and not to those who are already on a lawful path under existing rules. This would uphold the principles of fairness, consistency, and trust that form the foundation of good governance.
