What’s The Real Question? I used to think the key to a successful negotiation or investigation was having the right answers. I was wrong. It’s about asking the right questions. At Kastle Consulting, calibrated questions have been one of the most powerful tools in our toolkit. They’re not just clever, they’re strategic. These are open ended questions, usually starting with “what” or “how,” designed to steer the conversation without confrontation. They shift pressure, expose motives, and open people up. fast. Here’s how I’ve used them in real-world situations: We once had a high stakes investigation where a key individual was stonewalling every inquiry. Nothing we said made a dent, until we stopped talking at them and started asking calibrated questions. Questions like: “What would need to happen for this to move forward?” “How does this situation look from your perspective?” That simple shift cracked the case wide open and gave us exactly what we needed to move forward. Here are 3 ways I use calibrated questions to get results: 1.Diffuse resistance: “How am I supposed to work with that?” lets them reframe without losing face. 2.Uncover the real issue: “What’s the biggest risk you’re seeing right now?” puts their concerns on the table. 3.Refocus chaos into clarity: “What are we really trying to accomplish here?” brings people back to purpose. In negotiations and investigations, it’s not about pressure, it’s about precision. Calibrated questions give you both.
