The Cyber Phork retweeted
Linux kernel 7.1 is released (removing 140,000 lines of code that supported some legacy software). Rising AI-assisted code debate aside, the new release brings a rewritten NTFS driver and some improvement for AMD and Intel CPUs. The new release also dropped supports for several legacy hardware. The idea is to have a leaner kernel which is easier to maintain as AI keeps on finding security flaws in obsolete drivers and thus making the job of maintainers difficult.

One who has demands on his time and must select what to spend it on? Maintaining support and fixing security exploits for hardware that's no longer in use is not a great way to spend your time. Especially if the security weakness can't be fixed (weak encryption required)

When I came into the Linux world, I thought having the latest kernel is better like we keep other stuff up-to-date. But kernels are different. You must choose the kernel which works better with your hardware doesn't matter if it is an old version. I still use 6.8.0 for my machine

The opening mentions steamdeck but the rest doesn’t elaborate. What steamdeck audio bug was this tackling?

Their has to he options if running hardware old enough that it get deprecated in Linux. The solution might be as simple as a custom kernel or not upgrading until a fix is built (likely custom programming)

I’m interested in how you got sip trunks working. :) Did you need the asterisk server? I figured openclaw could just pretend to be a sipphone and use any provider, without needing a local server.
