1000 houses were wired in Eastern Parishes prior to hurricane Melissa and another 3000 rewired or received assistance prior to and in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa through various projects. During the last financial year, the Ministry allocated one billion dollars to the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF) under a MOU with the objective of support to Energy Poverty. This is addition to the over two hundred million dollars allocated to JSIF under the Rural Electrification Programme MOU. This is a part of the efforts to address non-technical losses and with which all Members of Parliament are aware. Collectively, these investments form part of a broader national strategy to expand equitable access to electricity, address non-technical losses, and improve the quality of life for vulnerable households—an initiative with which all 63 Members of Parliament are familiar.

The Norwood Community Centre in St. James has been improved following a painting exercise on Labour Day (May 25) and the commissioning of a $4.5-million solar unit, which will provide electrical power to the facility. The project was completed by the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF). In an interview with JIS News, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Security and Peace, Hon. Major Road Improvements Underway Along Montpellier Main Road More than 10,000 residents are to benefit from ongoing upgrade works along the Montpellier Main Road corridor under the Shettlewood to Anchovy Infrastructure Upgrade Project. The project, being implemented in partnership with JSIF and the NWA, includes extensive road rehabilitation and critical pipeline improvement works following damage caused by Hurricane Melissa. This investment is helping to restore and strengthen the roadway while improving essential water infrastructure for surrounding communities. We thank motorists and residents for their continued patience and cooperation as work progresses along this important corridor.

Over the past few months, we have been working to transform the Kintyre Community Centre and Sports Complex into a space that truly serves the needs of the community. Through the combined efforts of my team, my foundation, Save Our Boys and Girls, our partners including Direct Relief and JSIF, and support from the Government, we’ve introduced an improved play area, upgraded football field, multipurpose sports court, and solar lighting, along with solar power to ensure the centre can function as a reliable emergency shelter when needed. #ProjectUpdate 🚜🚧 Work continues on the Shettlewood to Anchovy Control Section project. The retaining wall has been completed and the parapet works continues. We thank the resident and motorist for the continued cooperation and patience. The Government allocated J$100 million under the GO Road Rehabilitation Programme for works on critical sections of the roadway linking Anchovy, St James, to Shettlewood, Hanover. Fewer than 10,000 customers are still without power, with more than 95 per cent located in Westmoreland and St. Elizabeth. Speaking at this morning’s Post-Cabinet Press Briefing, the CEOof the Jamaica Public Service (JPS), Hugh Grant, explained that restoration efforts are being guided by assessments to determine customers’ readiness to safely receive service. Based on surveys conducted and through partnerships with the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF), JPS has identified that approximately 40 per cent of the remaining customers are not yet ready to be reconnected due to damage to their properties and electrical infrastructure. In these instances, electricity cannot be safely restored until the necessary repairs are completed.
