Mijn lessen over evolutieleer en de ontstaansgeschiedenis van de mens zijn behoorlijk schokkend voor studenten met een religieus wereldbeeld. Raad eens hoe ik daarop reageer? a) die studenten veroordelen en belachelijk maken. b) het gesprek aangaan met rationele argumenten. Verplicht ik iemand om oprecht een mechanistisch wereldbeeld te internaliseren? Nee. Maar ik sluit ook geen compromissen over de wetenschappelijke stand van zaken. Niet over wetenschappelijk onderzoek, niet over evolutie, niet over geslacht. En omgekeerd kan ik mensen die mijn wereldbeeld niet delen ook gewoon als mensen zien, zonder me verplicht te voelen om me in mijn woorden of gedrag te conformeren naar hun wereldbeeld.
