When engineers and doctors work together, patients have better outcomes 🦾🩻🔬 More than 60 students and faculty from @UCF's Biionix Cluster recently gathered at the College of Medicine for their 5th Annual Biionix Symposium where they shared their current projects and highlighted opportunities to collaborate. The interdisciplinary cluster brings together researchers from @Limbitless3D and @UCFCECS, doctors from the College of Medicine and scientists from @UCFSciences to develop better technologies and rehab methods to enhance patient quality of life. Some projects discussed at the symposium included AI-assisted gait analysis for physicians, biodegradable implants and targeted nanoparticle therapies that may improve bone and joint health. This year, some of the most emerging and exciting topics involved machine learning, space medicine and simulation technologies. All student research was impressive, but four students received special recognition for their efforts: ✨Best Posters✨ Sophie Bennett from Limbitless Solutions and Michael Freeland, from Luigi E. Meet two students graduating from UCF's Medicine-Engineering Double Degree Program (MEDD) - a unique double degree program training students for the future of healthcare. The program recognizes that the future of healthcare is in technology and that the workforce needs trained professionals who can understand both the biology of disease and the engineering principles to create new healthcare solutions. MEDD graduate Pavan Senthil conducted clinical research at Limbitless Solutions, Inc., a UCF organization that creates and provides 3D-printed, EMG-powered prosthetics for clinical trial participants, working with patients to understand their prosthetic limbs and increase their independence. Today, his career goal is to develop technology to help people. Michael Meyers graduated last spring and will begin his master's in electrical engineering in the fall. He wants to develop better ways to diagnose diseases through enhanced imaging technologies, such as A-I-assisted X-rays and non-invasive visual biopsies. Read more at the link below.
