Nigeria Begins Baseline Study on Methane Emissions in Livestock Sector The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has held a methodology review meeting with consultants from Netzence Sustainability Limited and 3Logy Limited ahead of the commencement of a national baseline study on methane emissions in the livestock sector. Speaking after the meeting, on Wednesday 15th October 2025, the Director, Sanitary Mandate and Climate Change, Dr. Ishiyaku Mohammed Musa, explained that the study aims to establish Nigeria’s baseline for greenhouse gas emissions, particularly methane, from cattle and other ruminants. According to him, 3logy Limited was engaged to design and implement a field-based assessment using real-time emission measurement devices powered by Netzence Sustainability Limited’s Close Carbon technology. He added that, “for us to effectively reduce emissions, we must first understand our current baseline.” As a demonstration of confidence in the leadership and strategic focus of the Ministry on livestock sector development, the GIZ, through its LiveSys Project, is supporting the baseline studies by funding the training of enumerators ahead of commencement of the studies. The project will train enumerators drawn from both the Federal and State Ministries of Livestock Development and conduct field measurements across six states - Adamawa, Ebonyi, Edo, Kano, Oyo and Plateau. The exercise will run from October to December 2025 and represents the first time Nigeria will directly measure, rather than estimate, methane emissions from livestock production systems. The outcome will provide reliable data to inform evidence-based policies for sustainable livestock management and climate action.

Earlier today, I engaged with the LiveSys Project team led by Dr. Birthe K. Paul (GIZ), together with partners International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and the African Union – InterAfrican Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR). Here’s what’s driving change: ✔️ A Common African Position on Sustainable Livestock to unlock finance & harmonize policies ✔️ Strong action on rangeland restoration, vaccination & AniTrac traceability ✔️ South–South collaboration & climate resilience through global knowledge exchange Grateful to LiveSys partners — GIZ, AU-IBAR, and ILRI — for championing a sustainable and prosperous future for our livestock farmers. It’s inspiring to witness collaboration at this scale. Together, we’re shaping a resilient livestock future for Africa.

Livestock systems are a cornerstone of African economies, supporting hundreds of millions of livelihoods, making significant contributions to food and nutrition security, and serving as a safety net in times of crisis. However, these systems face growing challenges from climate change, land degradation, disease pressures, and weak policy integration, further complicated by the multi-level governance within the continent. Today, at #ACS2, livestock systems are on the agenda! Join us at 16:00-17:00 (EAT) in Room F1 for a side event on ‘Integrating policy frameworks for sustainable and resilient livestock development in Africa.’ Organized with: @ILRI, Government of Kenya, @CGIARAfrica , @mercycorps , @jameel_observ , LiveSys More AICCRA at @Africa Climate Summit 2: africaclimatesummit2.et/pia
