If you don’t understand structure and loadpaths, you should not be doing finite element modeling. “Lovely model, how’d you validate it. Where is your FBD? Why didn’t you do this by hand?” And so forth

And it's only one pivot. Here's why: Biplanes were lightly stressed and had multiple loadpaths so you could just disconnect the front spars and fold the wing straight backwards. You couldn't do that on a monoplane./1

From first principles, I believe you are right. It would enable rapid propogation of horizontal cracks without the more diverse loadpaths in the rest of the wall. I suspect it made it easier to build and looked nice. However, as its still there maybe the point is moot.
