The downside is the loadtimes (especially for large PS3 games that load off the disc) and, unless it’s a PS3 or Wii U game, the disc would only store up to about 8 GiB or even just up to about 1 GiB.
There’s a reason games stopped being loaded directly off the disc since PS4/XB1

It's great haven't bought too many games for it but Im happy with the ones I have and I like replaying a lot of my favorite Switch 1 games with a higher resolution and better loadtimes

because this works better for my mental model, and it's not incorrect to do it (in fact it speeds up loadtimes significantly in some cases)

So it's true after all. Nice.😁 And deserved in a way, because the OG Xbox really was a crazy leap, what i just discovered recently playing on PS2 and Xbox. The difference is often striking, not just visuals and fps, but loadtimes and savetimes, too. An impressive piece of tech.

Asked Cursor CLI today to speed up my zsh loadtimes. It went through my zshrc/zprofile and sped it up by 3 seconds. Biggest save was lazy-loading conda.
Now my terminal feels instant again.

Project 06 is not at all a replacement for the original, given how different of an experience it is.
The popularity is mainly from 3 things:
-Speedrunning scene wanting optimized loadtimes and no lag
-Sonic fans wanting all Sonic games available
-Freeing 06 from the 360/PS3

So it was a typo. A DVD-ROM IS an optical disc, just like GameCube Optical Discs.
And yes, they DO use DVD format, and the same DVD laser for over 1GB capacity.
Nintendo just didn’t want to pay DVD Forum licensing fees and wanted shorter loadtimes, thus the different size.

Nobody's jumping through the roof because a Wii game got remade in 4K with faster loadtimes, they're jumping because the game was fun with friends/family and they get to play it again without having to dig out new hardware.
The FUN is the focus.
