Damn! Sorry to hear that! The 505th PIR was at FOB ST Mere. The company that I was in, C CO 1-504th, was based at ST Mere. I remember that incident vividly! Our Company was BDE QRF and responded to the crash site with others from our BDE. The rest of us at the CP assisted with mascal event, offloading and transporting to Charlie Med. Just know that there was a bunch of knuckle dragging Paratroopers doing everything possible to help the docs!

Was the Chinook shot down somewhere near Fallllujah? I was at FOB St Mere outside of Fallujah and our Company CP was right near the medevac LZ so we had secondary tasks to support mascal events. I remember assisting unloading a similar event.

The medic took my core temp - 107.8 degrees F I was in the Special Forces Qualification Course. I had done some hard training events. But I had never been this broken off. It was a hot, humid summer morning in North Carolina. 12 mile ruck 55 lbs dry water. Finish in 3 hours or less. Not a big deal, felt routine at this point in training. 90 minutes later we lost 30%-40% of the class to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. The deep sandy trail was littered with Green Beret Students lying on the ground. We had a MASCAL. More heat casualties than our medics could handle. At mile 9 I was all the way f*cked up. I moved like a drunken zombie, praying out loud between heaving breaths. "God... I need help. See me through." At 2 hours 59 seconds, I fell across the finish line. I realize the timing sounds fabricated. An instructor saw that I was in a bad place. He ordered a medic to get my core temperature. A medic gave me the silver bullet (If you know, you know). Temp read 107.8. I was transported to the hospital in the back of a truck filled with other heat casualties. The Doctor informed me that people can die of heat stroke when the body's temperature rises to 104 and 106 degrees. The hospital room cleared and I laid back in the hospital bed and stared at the fluorescent lights. My eyes filled with tears. Not of sadness or pain. It was a sense of deeply personal triumph. Growing up, I had a long history of quitting when things got hard. I hated that part of myself - the quitter. That day, I knew there was no longer any quit in me.
