West Mersea, Essex aerial view. Sitting on the western edge of Mersea Island, West Mersea is one of England’s best-known sailing communities and the main settlement on Britain’s most easterly inhabited island. Connected to the mainland only by the ancient causeway known as The Strood, the island has been occupied since Roman times and was an important centre for fishing and oyster harvesting for centuries. The harbour seen here opens into the Blackwater Estuary, famous for its traditional Thames sailing barges, mudflats rich in birdlife and some of the finest native oysters in Britain. The local oyster industry dates back at least to Roman occupation nearly 2,000 years ago, with the celebrated Colchester Native Oyster helping build the town’s prosperity. Today, West Mersea remains a thriving centre for sailing, boatbuilding and maritime life on the Essex coast. #WestMersea #MerseaIsland #Essex #BlackwaterEstuary #AerialPhotography #BritishCoast

The pairing nobody expects. Cognac and oysters. In the Charente they drink young cognac with oysters fresh from the coast. The salt against the fruit. Try it with rock oysters now, or wait for the English native season in autumn. Mersea, Colchester, where some of the best in the world are found.

New on The Essex Project. Over several months I followed reports of possible surviving mortsafes in Essex. The search eventually led to three churchyards: 📍 East Mersea 📍 Borley 📍 Henham The evidence raises interesting questions, although not necessarily clear answers. Three graves. Three questions. #EssexHistory #LocalHistory #Folklore #Churchyards thehistoryalchemist.com/the-…
