He was a friend of mine. I was maybe 17 when I ran into him at Merlefest and I asked about an album his wife had done the art for. We started chatting and he became an genuine friend who recognized me in crowds from then on. Nice, intelligent, mentor - the best!

Last weekend, I was proud to attend MerleFest in Wilkesboro, one of North Carolina’s most cherished music festivals that brings tens of thousands of visitors to Western North Carolina each year. I had the opportunity to meet and thank several artists for helping restore a community still recovering from Hurricane Helene. I was also glad to support local organizations and vendors, including enjoying the always-popular barbecue chicken wings from the Wilkes County Scouts! Thankful to the two officers who accompanied me during the event and to all law enforcement officers who work every day to keep North Carolina communities safe so families and visitors can enjoy events like MerleFest without worry.
