“Slowjamastan” En el desierto del Valle de Coachella, en California, cerca de la frontera con México, existe una curiosa creación: la República de Slowjamastan, una micronación fundada por Randy Williams. Este territorio de poco más de cuatro hectáreas, que a simple vista parece un terreno árido sin importancia, se transforma en un mundo propio al cruzar sus límites simbólicos. Slowjamastan tiene reglas extravagantes: están prohibidos los crocs, no se permite enviar correos masivos y el exceso de velocidad solo es aceptado si alguien lleva tacos con urgencia. Su creador, también conocido como “el sultán”, es un locutor radial en San Diego que decidió fundar su propio país durante la pandemia, cuando no pudo completar su meta de visitar todos los países del mundo. La idea comenzó como un proyecto creativo y se concretó en 2021 con la compra del terreno. Poco a poco, Williams construyó una identidad nacional: instaló puestos fronterizos, diseñó una bandera, emitió pasaportes y hasta creó una moneda propia. También se autoproclamó líder, adoptando una estética inspirada en figuras autoritarias, pero con un tono claramente humorístico. Actualmente, Slowjamastan cuenta con unos 25.000 “ciudadanos” de más de 120 países. La ciudadanía es gratuita, aunque existen cargos simbólicos pagos, como embajadores o miembros del parlamento. La micronación también organiza eventos, ceremonias y actividades que fortalecen el sentido de comunidad, tanto de forma presencial como online. Más allá del juego, el proyecto refleja una necesidad real: ofrecer un escape de las tensiones políticas y sociales del mundo actual. En este “país”, incluso está prohibido hablar de política, lo que atrae especialmente a personas cansadas de la polarización. Para muchos, se trata de un espacio de diversión, creatividad y conexión global. Slowjamastan forma parte de un fenómeno más amplio: el de las micronaciones, territorios simbólicos creados por individuos que imitan las estructuras de un Estado. En 2027, será sede de MicroCon, un encuentro internacional de estos proyectos. Aunque aún no tiene infraestructura para alojar visitantes, su creador planea expandirlo. Más que un simple experimento, Slowjamastan se ha convertido en una comunidad global que conecta personas a través del humor, la imaginación y el deseo de pertenecer a algo diferente.
