A Rosy Footman moth, found in Richmond Park during #MothWeek. Footman moths, so named as their wing shape was said to resemble the cloak of a Georgian footman, have caterpillars which feed on lichens, found in abundance on the Park’s ancient oaks. #mothsmatter

Lovely to catch Rare glimpse of Scarce Footman Eilema complana, in its Natural Heathland Moorland Habitat at Gentleshaw Common. Unlike well rounded Common, Dingy, Buff & Orange Footman, much slender looking. Larvae feed on Healthy Lichens & Mosses @BritishMoths @s4r4h_l #MothWeek

🦋👁️💜 The polyphemus moth, Antheraea polyphemus, is one of the largest members of the family Saturniidae. Notice its purple eyespots used to scare off predators on its hindwings. It's named after the Greek giant cyclops, Polyphemus. #NaturallyConnected #MothWeek #PolyphemusMoth

Did you know? Each year, tiny Bogong moths in Australia travel over 600 miles at night—navigating using the stars! 🌌 These incredible insects migrate to cool mountain caves to escape the heat, then return months later to mate and complete their life cycle. Scientists only recently discovered that, like birds and humans, these moths use the night sky as their compass. 🤯🧭 Learn more about Bogong Moths: cnn.it/45gb1VH Want to witness the magic of moths yourself? It’s super easy: 🔦 Hang a white sheet and shine a light on it after dark. 👀 Watch as moths and other night insects come to visit. 📸 Record your sightings using iNaturalist to help monitor nocturnal biodiversity!
