The model architecture is guided by neutron transport physics. I introduce Multigroup Attention Pooling, a convolutional neural network component which allows the model to learn the highly nonlinear spatial dependence of neutron behavior across 9 OOMs of energy. When inspecting activations, it turns out that the layer picks up on this inductive prior and recovers the expected neutron flux distribution within each geometry! I’m excited to build on this result in pursuit of higher fidelity neutron transport surrogates with applications across core design, isotope production, and more.
