Truth is
With what we know now, Sixers nevr should have traded Theo Ratliff and Toni Kukoc for Mutumbo at the deadline. The team had the best record in the NBA and Larry Brown just fundamentally misunderstood what was making the team good outside of Iverson. Kukoc was huge in spacing the floor for that team, but was totally disregarded.
Sixers were 42-14 before the trade and went 14-12 after the trade. It's not as simple as losing Kukoc, but if you go back and watch some of these games pre-trade vs. post-trade, you can see how that team should have been structured better around Iverson.
I think the hand-wringing about "Shaq-stoppers" on defense in that era blinded a lot of teams to the importance of real shooting in an NBA offense.
And it seems to me like Iverson more than almost anybody could have benefitted from a spaced floor, not having to drive into all those big bodies in the paint all the time. Could have really helped his efficiency I think.
