Some very courageous and principled members of the Toronto District School Board Parent Involvement Advisory Committee ("TDSB PIAC") are bringing a resolution to the June 16, 2026 meeting of PIAC.
The meeting is at 5050 Yonge Street, starting at 7:00 PM
Here's part of what the resolution says:
---
PIAC members are among the most active parents in the education system, and the board and province want to be advised by us about how to engage parents and encourage them to get more involved in their children’s education; to be as actively involved as we all are in our school communities.
That is our mission. That is our mandate. We are the Parental Involvement Advisory Committee and we are an advisory body with the mandate to advise on parental involvement.
It certainly is within our mandate to advise on matters of educational policy more generally, but only when solicited to provide such advice from either the TDSB or the Ministry. PIAC’s consultation working group has provided comments on numerous policy changes over the years when the TDSB solicited advice on such policy changes. We trust that our past solicited comments have been valuable.
However, it is not within PIAC’s mandate to engage in activities not specifically identified in regulation, including:
- Using one’s role and access within PIAC to market external events that are unaffiliated with PIAC, the TDSB, or school councils, particularly if such events are paid or PIAC members are receiving consideration for doing so
- advise on matters of policy of how to improve student achievement and wellbeing, unless specifically asked to do so by the TDSB or Ministry
- develop human rights policies, including inventing and promoting new categories of racism, for example any categories of racism that only recently emerged, and which the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal has clearly stated is “not necessary”.
