This is so heart-wrenching! Gol Park was my favourite haunt in Kolkata (I was not ‘aantel’ enough for Nandan). It was the Ramakrishna Mission School of Languages, situated in Gol Park, where I learned multiple languages, visited the Rabindra Pathagar nearby often, hung around with friends along the pavement on the way to Gariahat, relishing telebhaja, and debating abstract ideas with college mates on the way to Dhakuria Lake (Rabindra Sarobar). Two people were injured and at least 10 arrested after a violent clash erupted between two groups in south Kolkata’s Golpark area on Sunday night. The confrontation on Kankulia Road in the Rabindra Sarobar Police Station’s jurisdiction around 8:30 PM involved the Sona Pappu gang from another locality visiting the area and being challenged by another gang (most media reports have used the word “group” instead of “gang” to gloss over the severity of the crime). Stones and then bombs were hurled, and shots fired, from both sides, injuring two belligerents and scaring the passers-by. Such incidents used to be associated with faraway neighbourhoods such as Entally during my years in Calcutta.
