Farewell, Oba Lapite
I am deeply saddened by the passing of Professor Kola Oyewo—scholar, actor, teacher, cultural ambassador, and dear colleague.
I had the privilege of working with him on Koseegbe, Oleku and Saworoide where he gave a memorable performance as Oba Lapite. His portrayal brought depth, dignity, and humanity to the role, making the character one of the film’s most enduring figures.
Ironically, Lapite’s death in the story created a challenge for me as a filmmaker. Once he was publicly executed by Lagata, I could not bring Kola Oyewo back into the narrative. I missed him then.
Today, I miss him again.
Kola Oyewo belonged to a rare generation that successfully bridged scholarship and performance. He inspired countless students, actors, and audiences through his talent, humility, and lifelong commitment to learning, culture, theatre and film.
Nigeria has lost a remarkable artist.

Your legacy will endure in the stories you told and the lives you touched.

Speaking to Al Mayadeen, Professor Mohammad Marandi said the US-Iran negotiations have effectively returned to the framework that existed weeks ago after the United States withdrew additional conditions it had attempted to impose.
Referring to remarks by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Marandi maintained that the release of Iran’s frozen assets remains part of the agreement despite US claims to the contrary.
He argued that US President Donald Trump's last-minute demands, along with the escalation against Lebanon, Iran, and the Strait of Hormuz, only delayed progress before ultimately failing to alter the deal's core terms.
According to Marandi, the agreement now largely reflects the understandings that had already been under discussion, including sanctions relief on Iran's energy exports, the release of Iranian assets, and ending the war on Lebanon.

🚨 Dr. Stacey Patton, a professor at Howard University, wrote an article in which she blamed Austin Metcalf – and his family – for Karmelo Anthony's decision to murder him.
Titled "Dear Jeff Metcalf: Your Son is Dead Because You Failed to Teach Him That Black Boys Have Boundaries," the article argues that Jeff Metcalf failed to teach Austin that "black children have boundaries." In other words, Jeff should have taught Austin that black people will try to kill you if you ask them to stop violating social norms.
While Patton falls short of outright defending Karmelo's decision, the entire purpose of the piece is to rationalize his behavior. Kind of like "Sure Karmelo shouldn't have stabbed him, but it was Austin's fault at the end of the day."
She writes, "We have to talk about Austin's decision to approach and confront." As if Austin didn't have the right to tell someone from another school to leave his school's tent. As if somehow that minor confrontation justifies stabbing him in the heart. It is complete insanity. Patton ties Austin's behavior to "a long cultural tradition of policing black bodies and space."
Right.
Patton's Substack has nearly 50k followers. He has 300k followers on Facebook. She is an accomplished professor and journalist. The article received thousands of likes. We've all seen the low-class black people causing a scene outside of the courthouse. But it appears that even many educated blacks believe that people of their race have the right to murder anyone who asks them to stop playing music in public, respect physical boundaries, and so on.
"Let us do what we want or we'll kill you" appears to be the message being broadcast by a sizable share of the black community. You don't have to be a far-right radical to recognize the many unsettling implications this holds for the future of American race relations.

Liviu Librescu (1930–2007) was a aerospace engineer and professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics at Virginia Tech.
Born in Romania, he endured persecution as a Jewish child during World War II. At age 76, during the shooting in Norris Hall, he used his body to barricade the classroom door while the shooter fired through it.
This gave his students time to escape through the windows. All but one of his students survived; Librescu was killed.
