In politics, ideology is not a mere slogan, it is the oxygen that keeps a party alive. The moment a party treats ideology as optional and chases power at any cost, it begins to die from within. History is littered with such examples, and two of the most glaring ones today are Shiv Sena (Uddhav faction) and the Trinamool Congress. The day Uddhav Thackeray decided to abandon Shiv Sena’s core Hindutva ideology and climbed into bed with its ideological opponents, just to become Chief Minister, he didn’t just break an alliance. He broke the trust of lakhs of karyakartas who had stood with Balasaheb’s Shiv Sena not for ministerial berths, but for the ideology of Hindutva, Marathi asmita and uncompromising nationalism. The support base of any ideological party does not come for power. They come because they believe the party stands for something bigger than themselves. When that belief is betrayed for the chair, the same people who once filled the streets for the party simply walk away quietly, but permanently. That is exactly what happened to Uddhav’s Shiv Sena. Mamata Banerjee’s TMC is walking the same road to ruin, only faster. She rose to power by fearlessly exposing decades of Left Front misrule in Bengal and by raising her voice against the unchecked influx of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants that was changing the demography and threatening the security of the state. Bengalis voted for her because they saw her as the only leader willing to fight both the “communist mohalla gangs” and the dangerous demographic invasion. But what did she do once she tasted power? She not only embraced those very communist musclemen into her fold but gradually became their biggest patron. Over the years, TMC turned into the biggest protector of illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators, giving them shelter, ration cards, voter cards and political protection while ordinary Bengalis watched their culture, safety and future being steadily eroded. The same leader that once thundered against infiltration became its most prominent patron and facilitator. This is ideological suicide. Contrast this with the BJP. One may accuse the BJP of many things including political maneuverings of the kind which its last generation would have described as immoral or unethical, But the fact remains no one can accuse BJP of betraying its core ideology. Whether it is the construction of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya or the historic abrogation of Article 370, the BJP has delivered on its foundational promises without compromise or apology. It has not diluted Hindutva to please anyone. It has not sacrificed national security or cultural identity at the altar of political convenience. That is why, despite every attack, every narrative and every setback, the BJP continues to command the loyalty and confidence of its supporters. Because when a party remains loyal to its ideology, its supporters remain loyal to the party. Parties without ideology or shifting ideology eventually become hollow shells, surviving on temporary alliances, money power and fear, but losing the one thing that actually matters, the soul of their workers and the faith of their people. Shiv Sena under Uddhav has already paid the price. TMC is paying it right now. Any party that thinks it can survive by repeatedly selling its ideology for power will meet the same fate. Because in the end, people don’t vote for power-hungry machines. They vote for belief.
