The K-shaped economy just came for crypto.
One side is stacking Bitcoin. The other side got liquidated on memecoins.
And it's only going to get worse from here.
Retail and institutions saw the exact same ticker in 2020.
One side held. One side chased.
A Bank for International Settlements study across 95 countries found roughly 3 out of 4 retail crypto investors lost money on their initial investment.
Meanwhile the upper arm of the K:
• BlackRock IBIT: 782,000 BTC (3.7% of all supply)
• Strategy (MSTR): 780,897 BTC, targeting 1,000,000 by year-end
• Satoshi Nakamoto's wallets: ~1.1 million BTC
• Wall Street total: 2.4 million BTC
• US Strategic Bitcoin Reserve: ~328,000 BTC
• El Salvador: 7,500 BTC and counting
• Brazil (RESBit bill): proposed reserve of up to 1,000,000 BTC
Wall Street now owns more Bitcoin than Satoshi.
Not a hot take. Arithmetic.
The lower arm:
• Altcoin market cap down 40% in Q1 2026
• Memecoins down 72% from the peak
• 38% of tracked altcoins sit at all-time lows
• Altcoin trading volume collapsed 80% since October
• Exit liquidity gone
And here's the stat that should end every debate.
Bitcoin fell 48% from its October peak of $126,000 to its February low near $66,000.
Across that same drawdown, aggregate spot Bitcoin ETF holdings only declined ~6%.
Institutions watched their positions get cut nearly in half and didn't sell.
Retail on perps got liquidated before they could log in.
The news from this week alone:
• Charles Schwab ($12 trillion AUM, 39 million accounts) opened direct spot BTC and ETH trading
• Morgan Stanley launched MSBT, a spot Bitcoin ETF, and added BTC/ETH/SOL to E*Trade
• Goldman Sachs filed for a Bitcoin income ETF
• Strategy bought another $1 billion in BTC last week during the crash
• 40% of publicly traded BTC treasuries now trade below NAV
The K-shape inside crypto is uglier than most will admit.
But the survivors are obvious.
Ethereum already showed the template with stablecoins. $320 billion market, more than half runs on ETH rails.
The playbook is the same at every level: own the category leader.
HYPE for decentralized perps. ZEC for privacy. TAO for decentralized AI. Bitcoin and Ethereum as the core.
Don't buy the copies. Buy the leaders.
Retail bought the memes.
Institutions bought the Bitcoin.
We already know who won.
