Imam Malik رحمه الله said: “The latter part of this Ummah will not be rectified except by what rectified its first part.” And what rectified the first part of this Ummah was pure Tawheed, sincere worship, and strict adherence to revelation. This is why the Salaf were severe against innovations connected to graves, saint veneration, and exaggerated intercession. Not because they denied the virtue of the righteous, but because they protected the exclusive rights of Allah جل جلاله. The principle is simple and unchanging: Whoever calls upon Allah جل جلاله alone has fulfilled Tawheed. Whoever directs worship to other than Allah جل جلاله has fallen into shirk. Whoever seeks nearness through intermediaries in acts of worship has imitated Quraysh. And whoever dies upon pure Tawheed will enter Paradise, even if punished for sins. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: من مات وهو يعلم أن لا إله إلا الله دخل الجنة “Whoever dies knowing that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah will enter Paradise.” Narrated by Muslim. This is the foundation. This is the call of the Prophets. This is the path of the Salaf. And this is the line that can never be blurred. A necessary principle here is that not every person who falls into shirk is immediately judged as a mushrik in the legal sense until the proof is established upon him with clarity. The action may be shirk in itself, but the ruling upon the individual requires detail, conditions, and removal of impediments. Allah جل جلاله said: وما كنا معذبين حتى نبعث رسولا “And We do not punish until We have sent a Messenger.” Surah Al Isra 17:15 This establishes the principle of إقامة الحجة, that punishment and blame are tied to the establishment of clear proof. Imam Al Shafii رحمه الله said: “Allah has names and attributes that came in His Book and were reported by His Messenger ﷺ. It is not permitted for anyone, after the proof has been established upon him, to reject them.” This shows a major usuli principle in the madhhab of Al Shafii رحمه الله: the establishment of proof matters before blame is fixed. This is especially relevant in lands where ignorance is widespread, knowledge is scarce, and people inherit practices without understanding their reality. But the Ahl ilm distinguish: If the matter is from the clear foundations of the religion, such as directing dua, sacrifice, or seeking rescue to other than Allah جل جلاله, and the proof has reached him plainly, then the excuse falls away. Imam Ibn Kathir رحمه الله said regarding: رسلا مبشرين ومنذرين لئلا يكون للناس على الله حجة بعد الرسل “Messengers as bringers of good news and warners so mankind would have no argument against Allah after the Messengers.” Surah An Nisa 4:165 Meaning the excuse ends when the truth is clarified. The fiqh of Imam Al Shafii رحمه الله here is important because many misuse takfir without understanding his principles. Al Shafii رحمه الله differentiated between: The act itself being kufr or shirk. And the doer being declared kafir or mushrik. This distinction is essential. For example: Prostrating to a grave is shirk. Calling upon the dead for help is shirk. Slaughtering for other than Allah جل جلاله is shirk. But the individual may be excused if: He is genuinely ignorant. He was raised upon that and never had the truth clarified. He misunderstood the evidences. He lives in an environment where falsehood is dominant and knowledge absent. This is why Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله said: “I may say that a statement is kufr, but I do not declare the individual a kafir until the proof is established.” The Salaf combined two things: Severity against shirk. Justice towards individuals. Neither the path of Murjiah who dilute shirk, nor the path of Khawarij who rush into takfir.

O Allah جل جلاله, keep our hearts firm upon Tawheed, protect us from shirk in all its forms, and make us from those who worship You alone with sincerity. Guide us to the straight path and do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us. Indeed, You are the All Hearing, the All Knowing. The Quran repeatedly exposes the reality of the mushrikin of Quraysh, not merely as history, but as a warning for every generation. Their disease was not denial of Allah جل جلاله as Creator, but corruption in worship. Allah جل جلاله said: ولئن سألتهم من خلق السماوات والأرض ليقولن الله “And if you asked them who created the heavens and the earth, they would surely say: Allah.” Surah Az Zumar 39:38 And He said: ولئن سألتهم من خلقهم ليقولن الله “And if you asked them who created them, they would surely say: Allah.” Surah Az Zukhruf 43:87 Imam Ibn Kathir رحمه الله said this proves they affirmed the Rububiyyah of Allah جل جلاله, yet this did not enter them into Islam because they corrupted His Uluhiyyah. Mere belief that Allah exists or created all things is not enough without singling Him out in worship. Allah جل جلاله exposed their justification: ما نعبدهم إلا ليقربونا إلى الله زلفى “We only worship them so that they may bring us nearer to Allah.” Surah Az Zumar 39:3 And He said: ويقولون هؤلاء شفعاؤنا عند الله “And they say: These are our intercessors with Allah.” Surah Yunus 10:18 Imam Al Tabari رحمه الله explained that they did not believe the idols created or sustained, but they made them intermediaries in worship. This is the very essence of shirk. Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله said whoever makes between himself and Allah intermediaries, calling upon them, relying upon them, and asking them for intercession has resembled the mushrikin of old. Allah جل جلاله said regarding their state in hardship: فإذا ركبوا في الفلك دعوا الله مخلصين له الدين فلما نجاهم إلى البر إذا هم يشركون “When they board a ship, they call upon Allah, sincere to Him in religion. But when He delivers them to land, at once they associate partners with Him.” Surah Al Ankabut 29:65 The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: إذا سألت فاسأل الله وإذا استعنت فاستعن بالله “If you ask, then ask Allah. If you seek help, then seek help from Allah.” Narrated by At Tirmidhi This establishes that the foundation of supplication and ultimate reliance belongs solely to Allah جل جلاله. Allah جل جلاله also said: وإذا قيل لهم اتبعوا ما أنزل الله قالوا بل نتبع ما ألفينا عليه آباءنا “And when it is said to them: Follow what Allah has revealed, they say: Rather, we follow what we found our forefathers upon.” Surah Al Baqarah 2:170 Imam Mujahid رحمه الله said this verse condemns blind following when it opposes revelation. Truth is not measured by ancestry, culture, or inherited customs. Allah جل جلاله said: فإنها لا تعمى الأبصار ولكن تعمى القلوب التي في الصدور “For indeed it is not the eyes that are blind, but the hearts within the chests are blind.” Surah Al Hajj 22:46 Al Hasan al Basri رحمه الله said the disease of the heart is more dangerous than the disease of the body, because the corruption of the heart leads to eternal ruin. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ألا وإن في الجسد مضغة إذا صلحت صلح الجسد كله وإذا فسدت فسد الجسد كله ألا وهي القلب “Indeed in the body is a piece of flesh. If it is sound, the whole body is sound.
