Astronomers thought dark energy might not exist. A team checked the math behind that claim and found it confused two different ages. The universe is still speeding up. In late 2025, a team of astronomers from Yonsei University in South Korea published a study arguing that one of modern cosmology's most important discoveries, the accelerating expansion of the universe, might be an illusion caused by measurement error rather than a real physical effect. If correct, it would have meant the 1998 discovery that earned Saul Perlmutter, Brian Schmidt, and Adam Riess the Nobel Prize in Physics needed to be revised. The 2025 study's argument centred on Type Ia supernovae, exploding white dwarf stars used as standard candles to measure cosmic distances because their peak brightness is highly predictable. The team argued that these supernovae reached different peak brightness levels as the universe aged, and that astronomers had mistaken this ageing effect for genuine cosmic acceleration. A team led by Dr Phil Wiseman at the University of Southampton set out to test that claim directly, revisiting the same supernova data with the same statistical rigour. They found two specific errors. The 2025 analysis incorrectly treated the age of a galaxy as equivalent to the age of the star that eventually exploded within it, a conflation that distorted the timeline the entire argument depended on. The team also identified a second, separate methodological correction tied to host galaxy mass that the original analysis had omitted. When Wiseman's team corrected for both errors and recalibrated the supernovae accounting for different host environments and populations, the evidence for cosmic acceleration came back unchanged. The study was published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society and concluded that the apparent challenge to the standard cosmological model stemmed from errors in data interpretation rather than a fundamental flaw in our understanding of the cosmos. What this confirms, and what it does not, matters equally. The universe is still expanding at an accelerating rate, exactly as it has been understood to be since 1998. What remains completely unresolved is why. Dark energy is the name physicists give to whatever is causing that acceleration. It is a label for an unknown, not an explanation. Whether it is a fixed cosmological constant or a dynamic force that changes over time is still entirely open, and a separate, unrelated mathematical paper published in May 2026 in the Proceedings of the Royal Society A has proposed yet another alternative explanation rooted in instabilities in general relativity itself, a question this study does not address one way or the other. A claim that one of cosmology's foundational discoveries was wrong. A team that checked the arithmetic. The universe is still accelerating. Nobody knows why.
