The remaining upper 150mm of the existing pitch surface was stripped out, with the lower rootzone then lightly cultivated and levels established ahead of laser grading across the full pitch. Alongside this, removal of the artificial carpet and rubber began, and excavation works commenced for the pitch widening programme. It's a standard, and fifa approved/inspected, sand based rootzone system. 12 inches of sand built on top of a gravel base with drainage. There's no concrete anywhere, it just looks like that because it's compacted, but mainly because you're looking at it with Anti-American bias.

People think the rootzone looks like concrete so they assume it's getting laid on a hard surface
