#SciOTD 𝗧𝗬𝗣𝗛𝗢𝗢𝗡 𝗥𝗨𝗕𝗬 𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗖𝗞 𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗡 𝗩𝗜𝗦𝗔𝗬𝗔𝗦 🌀 Barely a year after the devastation of Super Typhoon #YolandaPH, Typhoon #RubyPH (#Hagupit) made its initial landfall on Dolores, Eastern Samar, on this day in 2014. The tropical cyclone rapidly weakened as it slowly crossed the Eastern Visayas-Southern Luzon area, partly due to the prevailing #amihan. Given its peak intensity days before landfall, exceeding 200 km/h, many feared that RUBY would be another ‘YOLANDA’, but its rapid weakening, together with more intensive preparations, reduced its impacts. In total, RUBY claimed 24 lives and left around 5.66 billion pesos worth of damage, according to NDRRMC.

#OTD in 2014, #TyphoonHAGUPIT (local name #RubyPH) peaked as an impressive 180mph super #typhoon. It weakened to Category 3 status by the time it struck the #Philippines on the 6th, affecting areas still recovering from #Haiyan the year before and killing 18 people.
