On the 16th day of Pride I would like to honour Bayard Rustin. A gay American leader in the social movements for civil rights, socialism, pacifism and non-violence, and gay rights. I find his famous quote inspiring: "We need, in every community, a group of angelic troublemakers."

On the 15th day of Pride, I would like to honour Joan Armatrading, the lesbian singer-songwriter. With a recording career of over 50 years, she's recorded some amazing folk, jazz and blues songs. One of my favourites being "Love and Affection" which is just stunning.

Rustin is an unsung hero. As an openly gay man in an era of pervasive discrimination, Rustin’s contributions were nothing short of heroic, and his story is fascinating. He passed away in 1987. In 2013, Barack Obama posthumously awarded Rustin the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Rustin was the principal organizer of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963. The final speaker Martin Luther King Jr., standing in front of the Lincoln Memorial, delivered his historic "I Have a Dream" speech calling for an end to racism and racial segregation.
