Missteps Perfecting the Shutterbug Strut
--Not your everyday Historical Fiction
Excerpt-Chapter 22: Casablanca, 1928
--Paulin finished his harirasoup. He said, “We are dealing with a ruthless killer. I cannot risk your safety.”
--Alexandra sighed and stared out at the headlights of the passing traffic. They were going to make her work harder than necessary. “Where did you serve, Lieutenant?”
--“Verdun.” He pushed aside his soup bowl. His face fell sallow, gaze distant. “On ne passe pas.”
--“They shall not pass.” It was the rallying cry that had saved France. Verdun. No vaster slaughterhouse existed. Throughout 1916, the French and Germans had fed half a million men to the meat grinder. To this day, over 100,000 dead remained missing in Zone Rouge.
--Alexandra said, “My brother William lost much of his face and an arm at Amiens. Thomas fell at Cambrai. I plan to visit Bourlon Wood, so my oldest brother may know I have not forgotten him.”
--“Then France is forever in your debt.” Paulin lifted his glass. “To the heroism of your brothers.”
--She raised hers. “And to you, Lieutenant. They did not pass.”
