Workshop of Rogier van der Weyden (about 1399-1464), "Dives Tormented by Demons", silverpoint with blind stylus and touches of copperpoint on off-white prepared paper, about 1440/64
"Dives was condemned to hell for his treatment of the beggar Lazarus in the biblical parable. He is tortured by demons and pleads to heaven for a drop of water.
This drawing is from the workshop of Rogier van der Weyden, renowned for his expressive paintings. Rogier's apprentices made copies after his works in silverpoint, although the source of this drawing is not known. Blind stylus was used to incise and scrape through the paper, adding highlights, textures and contours."
