DePIN-ning the Map 📌
Ever used a navigation app? Then you're one of over two billion people working for free, as you collect valuable data.
But, MapMetrics is building a navigation app that rewards users with crypto and works with other DePINs to provide AI-powered insights.
Mapping a New Course
In navigation apps like Google Maps and Waze, every search, every route taken, every point of interest explored becomes a data point, analyzed and monetized through advertising and insights sold to businesses, translating into billions of dollars in revenue for big tech, but nothing for users.
MapMetrics is developing a navigation app where user contributions are recognized for being essential for the map's functionality and rewarded with its token
$MMAP. The aim is to create a comprehensive map offering insights that go beyond traditional navigation apps.
To make sure the traffic and map information is reliable, MapMetrics has a Special Position Tracker (SPT), a small in-car gadget, which collects highly accurate and secure traffic data. Its data encryption makes it harder for fraudulent information or fake updates to infiltrate the system. Users can also vote to confirm the accuracy of updates.
While big tech charges significant fees for access to their map APIs (Application Programming Interfaces), MapMetrics anticipates offering its Web3 map API at a fraction of the cost, potentially a third of Google Maps' pricing, opening up access to high-quality map data for a wider range of companies, including scooter rental companies. Revenue from this API will further benefit contributers through token buybacks.
DePIN-powered Maps
The added power of MapMetrics’ vision lies in strategic collaborations with other decentralized physical infrastructure networks (DePINs). Co-founder Brent van der Heiden realized that these projects often need a map to showcase where their data is located. By integrating diverse datasets from specialized DePINs, the MapMetrics map is enriched, decision-making is better informed and participating DePINs can generate revenue.
Here’s a glimpse into the kinds of data that MapMetrics, in conjunction with its DePIN partners, is poised to deliver:
Weather: By integrating SkyX, MapMetrics can provide users with precise weather data gathered from a decentralized network of weather stations, including the potential for real-time weather alerts.
Noise Pollution: By integrating with Silencio Network, MapMetrics can overlay noise pollution levels gathered from over 1 million sensors onto the map, enabling sound decisions to be made.
Air Quality: A collaboration with Ambios Network (formerly Ambient Network) can enable the integration of air quality data from their extensive network of sensors. This integration could allow MapMetrics users to view air pollution levels, enabling healthier choices.
Electric Vehicle (EV) Charger Availability: Integrating Charge data into the map would allow EV drivers to find charging points that meet their needs.
AI-powered Decisions
To fully unlock the potential of this integrated data, MapMetrics has introduced MILO, an AI-powered data explorer. MILO is designed to transform complex datasets into interactive, map-based visualizations, allowing users to easily search and understand the wealth of hyperlocal information available for a range of decisions.
MILO's first real-world test showcased its potential in the Amsterdam housing market, demonstrating MILO's ability to not only locate information but also to provide critical, actionable insights.
Every AI query that touches data from DePIN partners will include micro-payments back to those projects.
To actively enrich the map, AI will also identify needed user contributions, deploying quests for tasks like gathering rich metadata. Once users contribute, AI tools can extract valuable information – for example, turning a restaurant menu photo into searchable data on dishes, ingredients, and prices, allowing users to find which restaurants serve specific meals they are looking for at a price they are willing to pay.
This mix of user contributions and AI will drive a smarter, more personalized navigation experience - a shift from basic search results to AI-powered decision-making.
Own a Piece of the Map
With a growing community of over 65,000 users across 176 countries, MapMetrics presents a compelling vision: a decentralized, user-owned network that offers rich mapping insights and rewards its contributors. By combining crypto incentives, growing DePIN collaborations, and AI-driven tools, they're building a genuine alternative to the status quo.
For those looking to get involved, MapMetrics is giving away 5 peaq limited edition SPT devices, each month – a great opportunity to own a map of the future.
