For nearly half the year, heavy snowfall shuts down the Zojila Pass, cutting off one of India’s most critical mountain routes. But that is about to change.
The Zojila Tunnel project has achieved its final breakthrough, meaning tunnelling from both ends has successfully met inside the mountain. This marks the completion of the most challenging phase of one of India’s most ambitious infrastructure projects.
Once operational, the 13-km tunnel will provide all-weather connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh, drastically reducing travel disruptions caused by snow. It will also strengthen military logistics along the Srinagar–Kargil–Leh corridor, a route of immense strategic importance.

Seeking redemption for the sins of fratricide, the Pandavas traveled to the Himalayas to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva. Eluding them, Shiva assumed the form of a bull and dove into the ground at Kedarnath, leaving his majestic hump exposed on the surface. The Pandavas built the original temple here, which was later beautifully revived in the 8th century CE by the great philosopher-saint Adi Shankaracharya. In modern times, the shrine witnessed an absolute miracle during the catastrophic 2013 flash floods. A massive boulder, now universally worshiped as the Bheem Shila, hurtled down the mountains and rolled to a stop exactly behind the temple structure. Acting as a colossal protective shield, it diverted the raging waters around the main shrine, leaving Lord Shiva's stone abode completely untouched!
