When Joe proposes the Victory tour and his marketing plans, and Don King asks him if Michael is gonna be there, the camera cuts to Joe lighting his cigar. That’s a foreshadowing of Michael getting burnt. The wound itself resembles the cigar filler.

Michael becomes that child later on.
He can comfort the boy, but he can’t be comforted by his mother.
That child’s fate was uncertain, perhaps bleak. Michael, however, decided to take control of his life after that close call with death.

Pretty easy to understand more about a person's mind by asking them questions. Doesn't mean you accept every answer they give as literally true or ignore context/subtext - but asking questions, and then listening, conveys vast, beautiful information about the human psyche

There is something kinda novel in this film in seeing the comic book superheroine psuedo dominatrix thing played out for real and just saying fuck that subtext and she just is that.

My theory as to why A History of Violence and Eastern Promises have fallen off “best of the century” lists in recent years is because 90 minute movies that 100 percent trust you to pay attention, catch subtext and embrace ambiguity have fallen out of favor in the streaming era.
