This is a difficult problem to prove. Endgame tablebase tell us that both h3, Kd8, and Kd6 win, but what is the principle? Maintain the opposition and then put the opponent's King in zuziwang? I can't explain it.

An interesting example is Chess where there was a long period (roughly two decades) where computers were much better at the middle game, but bad at analyzing openings, and bad at endgames that weren't amenable to a "memorize everything" tablebase strategy.

i think weird tablebase positions is a little unfair bc a lot of them can't be solved by engines either with typical compute constraints, but yes would love to see an actual game played (either engines or humans)

There are some tablebase endgames that are completely inscrutable (forced mate in 200 by shuffling knights around). I'll try to find an actual game example for you
