Concluded my 3-year (fixed term) contract at
@UoDCeTPD (CeTPD)/
@UoDLifeSciences /
@dundeeuni from spring 2022 to spring 2025.
I could not really describe my job the last three years, but I got to do a lot. Providing
#StructuralBiology expertise, recombinant proteins, and mediocre 💻computing for
#biophysics,
#cryoEM,
#NMR, computational chemistry, and X-ray crystallography.
Thank you for taking me on
@alessiociulli 🇮🇹
Some random memories:
Founding, funding, and organizing The Annual Scottish Cryo-EM Symposium (2022
sites.google.com/view/iscem-…, 2023
sites.google.com/view/2023-c…) w/ Charlotte Crowe
@iSCEM_DD. Building the momentum for Glasgow 2024, and looking forward to this event continuing in Edinburgh for 2025.
Presenting at the annual Scottish NMR User Group (SNUG |
snug.ac.uk/) meetings as one of the few protein
#NMR 🧲 researchers in Scotland.
Attending several international conferences: New York, Barcelona, Washington DC, and Cambridge (UK)
Helping CeTPD move from SLS to across the road to the new building.
Setting up our own 💾petabyte scale HPC and being system admin (thanks
@NovatechLtd ).
Establishing
#cryoEM ❄️🔬 capability in CeTPD and working alongside Tom Owen-Hughes and Subbu at our new Dundee cryo-EM facility
#Glacios. Grateful to be involved with the user training and diverse projects that developed. Watching that moment people had “seeing your protein”. Could not have done this without critical training from
@SCMICryoEM / SCMI (James, David, Mairi) and the constant support of Paula da Fonseca & Edward P. Morris.
Advancing several
#TPD projects at CeTPD in exciting areas: New E3 ligases, targets (not Brd4), novel chemistry, and never loosing focus of
#ubiquitin). Too many people to list here.
World class support in proteomics from Gajanan Sathe, Ilaria Puoti, and Michael Tathem was critical for many projects. In addition to working in our SLS
#NMR facility with Denise Pryde and Olga Semenova.
Producing challenging therapeutically relevant proteins with Axel, Mark Dorward (
@b45her71),
@KevinHaubrich1, and others. Designing, expressing, and purifying proteins many have failed to work with was satisfying. Even though we failed a lot too, the Thomas Edison mind set of finding 1,000 ways not to get the protein kept us positive.
Internal and external collaborations were great, and it was always a unique experience with our stream of visiting scientists: Moriz Mayer, Peter Cossar, Xavier Barril, Francisco Javier Pérez Areales, Tessa Harzing, Jeyan Osman, Joecelyn Kirani Tan, Hao, Simon Krols, Hannah Peters, and more.
Amazing working with Ron Hay on
#ubiquitin and learning how to apply @refeynit
#massphotometry for everything w/ Anna Plechanovova.
Training early career researchers (ECRs) to develop lifelong skills and leveraging their experience for their next steps was truly fulfilling. We have produced some rising stars 🚀in
#TPD and future leaders.
3 papers published, 2 preprints, and hopefully more to come still.
The events with
#ECR leadership and initiative were truly unique: EC-TPD 2022 (Valentina Spiteri), one of the largest TPD conferences 2024, EUbopen 2024 (
@KevinHaubrich1 ,
@DyylaanL,
@alex_hallatt, Thomas Webb), CeTPD retreat 2023, several outings for seminar speakers, and opening CeTPD.
Great respect for every technician/RTP I have worked with in CeTPD (Diane Cassidy, Adam Wisher, Maria Papa, Mark Dorward) as well as those in SLS. They have strengthened the
@TechsCommit (including RTPs) and were a huge boost to our research.
Admin support from Diane Purves, Louise McGreavey, and their team. In addition to keeping CeTPD labs running Craig Turpie, Wren Cumming, and the rest of their team.
Serving as CeTPD photographer 📸 and delivering ~16,324 photos 🖼️ from our numerous events.
There were many great outings in our corner of Scotland🏴: taking random co-workers for midnight walks on the sea cliffs, the coastal areas on the North Sea🦭, walks in the Cairngorms⛰️, getting hypothermia 🥶 from exposure a few times, and many dinner parties. Saw a lot on the numerous photography trips with
@KevinHaubrich1 🐦.
Looking forward to the next chapter…📄
