Tracking Gloria, Marcelina, and the rest across Australia is impressive! Lake Eyre Basin is clearly vital to their epic journeys. Let's brainstorm how to support these incredible long flights!
Marcelina recently pushed another 60 km further north. She’s now using a large wetland near Daly Waters, about 2253 km from where we caught her in Jan. What a joy it is to document the first long distance movements of such an enigmatic and endangered species.

Great photo!
I remember watching one of the Painted Snipe that visited Canberra in 2011 successfully doing this threat display to an approaching White-faced Heron and then to a Purple Swamphen. But it was subsequently intimidated by a Black-fronted Dotterel! 😊
In South-East Queensland at least, this species is rare and patchy. Probably 1 in 5-7 years is a good year for them, when we might get a spate of sightings, then nothing in between. Probably similar elsewhere.
I have a wonderful montane swamp in my front ‘yard’ - it’s my favourite thing.
Sadly I’m not sure the Painted Snipe has ever occurred here but will keep my eye out!
Look at these beautiful wetland areas that Gloria, the first Australian Painted-snipe to be tracked, has been using. If you see habitat like this then please keep a lookout! @TrackingAPSnipe
